ABOUT THE RABBI
Rabbi Esteban Gottfried is the co-founder Beit Tefilah Israeli, the first independent progressive Jewish community in Tel Aviv, and continues to serve as rabbinical leader and director for the last 12 years. The community has evolved over the years into an organization for Israeli Creative Judaism, maintaining communal life, educational activities, experiential Jewish-Israeli programs and Shabbat and holiday services in the public space, in central locations around the country. Beit Tefilah Israeli is also active in musical and liturgical innovation, and serves as a model and a resource for other new prayer communities. Esteban was ordained twice as a Rabbi, at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 2012, and in 2015 received his ordination as an Israeli Rabbi by the new Israeli rabbinical Seminary, - a joint program led by Hamidrasha and the Shalom Hartman Institute. Prior to his rabbinical carrier, Esteban was an active Actor, playwright and Director in Israel for more than 20 years. His plays and films have been produced in leading theaters in Israel, as well as on television, and been awarded many prizes, including seven Ophir prizes (Israeli Oscars) for his film “The Revenge of Itzik Finklestein” including two personal Ophir prizes as screenwriter and actor. Born and raised in Buenos Aires, he immigrated to Israel in 1983. Married to Ruth and father of Maya and Toby.
